Colleen Atwood
Colleen Atwood designed the dresses for Tim Burton 'Alice in wonderland', she looked at how Alice has changed from a little girl to a young woman. she says " Lewis Caroll's own drawings, of which there aren't very many and they're quite simple. As Alice went through various eras, there's classic references for them. Because this is so different from what people are going to expect -- Alice isn't a ten-year-old girl, she's a young woman -- there's a nod to the classical need for that." SABRAMOVITCH (2009). Colleen Atwood has taken influence from John Tenniel's illustrations to the Disney animated adaptation for Alice while designing the famous blue dress she wears. Colleen Atwood said that she had to design for a young women not a child, while thinking about this she designed a dress for a more older girl with buttons down the front, she also took the corset out for a more lose fitting. the dress comes just above her ankles. there is also no pinafore.
i like this design as it is simple and classic it suits Alice well because you can see that its taken from the original but just made more 'grown up'.
Here are two dresses that she designed for the film, the first is Alice and the second is the White Queen. the dress that Alice wears was made out of the curtains in the Red Queen's castle I like how it gathers and 'puffs' out a bit like a mushroom. I like the White Queen's dress as it looks simple and old fashioned with is relevant seen as the book was written a long time ago. I like how it goes in at the waist and then 'puffs' out. Some of the designs I have already done 'puff' out at the waist.
This is the Red Queen, I like this garment because it emphasises her big head it has a huge collar and big shoulders it goes in at the waist to make her hips look bigger, this is relevant to her character as she likes big things and surrounds herself with big things. She is know as the 'evil' character and I think this is portrayed by the way she dresses and the colour of her garments, to me her big shoulders show that she is in power and her large head show that she is 'big headed' and she thinks everyone likes her and she wants everyone to do as she says and if they don't she shouts 'Off with their head!'. I like this design as it varies in size and this is relevant to my work as its to do with playing with scale. You can see in the concept sketch that her hair and face make a heart shaped silhouette which is then mirrored in the dress below giving an hour glass form.

Red Carpet Inspiration
Here are some dresses from award ceremonies what involve celebrities walking on the red carpet. I have selected these as I will be making a garment for a red carpet occasion and these few are very out of the ordinary which its how I want my garment to be.
Nicki Minaj wore this dress designed by Versace to the Grammy awards 2012. This is dress is relevant to my work as its like a fairytale tale Little Red Riding Hood's cape, and I will be making a dress inspired by Alice in Wonderland also a childhood story. I think this dress expresses her personality as its big, bold and stands out. I think Nicki is someone who wants to be noticed and in this dress and with the pope by her side she defiantly was noticed, I want the wearer of my garment to experience a transformation, to feel like they are in a fairy tale. for my garment I will experiment with different textile techniques and I think embroidery will be a main one.
Rihanna wore this dress designed by Jean Paul Gautlier to the Grammy awards in 2011, I like this dress because there is little left for the imagination. I picked this images as its like she is surrounded by rings of smoke similar to the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland as he blows smoke into rings.
When I look at this it is like I'm in a dream, this is something people don't normally wear.
I think Rihanna can pull this dress off as she is very confident about the way she looks and her body this is important for the designer if they are making a one-off garment.
It needs to fit the wearer's personality as much as their body this has helped me with my college work as my customer target must be someone who feels comfortable in the garment I will be making. This dress has made me think about doing a devore print on my garment because i like the effect it gives.
Lady Gaga wore a dress designed by Giorgio Armani to the Grammy awards in 2010. I like this dress as it is very 'in your face' just like other things Gaga wears. She is very futuristic, and she always stands out from the crowd - no doubt about it.
I like this dress as it reminds me of the top of a mushroom but at the same time it looks like the rings you get around planets. I know this garment has noting to do with Alice in wonderland but I like how it is constructed to look as if it is made of plastic, when i look at it i feel as if i have entered a new world from the future, this has inspired me to use plastic and other materials in my project work.

Beyonce Knowles wore a dress designed by Elie Saab to the Grammy awards in 2008. This dress links really well with my theme Alice in wonderland as the top of the dress looks very similar to mushrooms and its similar to some of my designs. I really like the use of colour and how the silver comes down in some parts, this has inspired me to let my print designs bleed and let the colour run. I think this is a really nice effective cascade of silver and blue. I also like how the top of the dress stands out (3D) I think I might make sculpted parts of my garment in 3D.
Rihanna wore a dress designed by Marchesa at the American music awards in 2009. I love the way the dress is very angular but looks feminine and delicate, its very box like similar to my designs based around the card men from the story Alice in Wonderland, I also like the laser cutting and how you can see through it, I would like to experiment with this and probably use this on my garment.
Kelly Osbourne wore a dress designed by Tadashi Shoji to the Grammy awards in 2011. I like this dress as it is very 'fluffy' it reminds me of flower petals, I like the idea of making it fluffy and soft this is relevant to my work because when I look at it it make me feel like I'm in a dream, I also really like the colour it fits well with my colour palette.
Vivienne Westwood
Vivienne Westwood has recently created a collection for Fall 2011 inspired by the Tim Burton film 'Alice in Wonderland' which was released in 2010. i am going to compare some of the garments with things I believe inspired her.
This is a shirt from the collection that i believe was influenced by the white rabbit. The frills on the sides of the shirt are similar to the way the scarf falls around the rabbits neck. The model wears two bracelets on her wrists this could be to represent the way the white rabbits frilly shirt sticks out the end of his jacket. I like this image as she looks smart and formal like the rabbit (he works for the Red Queen) but she also looks feminine and the frills give the shirt a 'girly' feel. This garment is similar to my studio work as I am hoping to produce a garment that is feminine and smart to be worn for a special occasion. The way the model wears her hair is
like the way the rabbit's ears stick up at both sides. she also has a silver necklace around her neck this could be represent the chain on the white rabbits hand watch. i think its important how they think about the presentation as it plays a big part, it gives the viewers a clear view of where your inspirations come from and also its very entertaining it allows them to feel part of the experience and like they have entered a new world full of surprises.
This is a garment from the same collection I picked this one as I believe she was influenced by the Mad Hatter as she uses similar colours, the jacket is a patchy brown colour and the one that the Mad Hatter wears in 'Alice in Wonderland' is a brown/green colour, there is also a orange colour inside the the hood which could represent the Mad Hatter's hair. The dress the model wears in the picture has a floral like print like the one the mad hatter has on his hat. I like this image as it shows a clear link between the two images and I can see how she has been influenced, and the way she has presented the the model shows that she has put thought into it as the way the make up has been applied shows resemblance to the mad hatter with the pale face and and the orange for the hair.

My Insperation
For my final major project I'm doing the theme 'Alice in Wonderland' and here are some things that I would like to focus on, I have selected images from a book, the film 'Alice in Wonderland' Tim Burton and also pictures of thing that I have created to draw from.
This first image is from the book Alice in Wonderland illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia. It's of the card men, I picked this image as I like the silhouette and I will interpret this in some of my designs.
Here are some picture from the Tim Burton film 'Alice in Wonderland' it's of the White Rabbit and March Hare, I like these two images as they are similar animals but are shown in completely different ways, I like how the White Rabbit is very clean and smart and the March Hare is 'mad-crazy' I think I might interpret this in my work.
This is the Bandersnatch is some kind of massive bear/dog it's covered in blood and dirt and smells, the bandersnatch belongs to the Red Queen as an attack dog. I picked this animal as well of the White Rabbit and the March Hare I really like the difference in fur and the way they are all do different things like the White Rabbit works as a messenger for the Red Queen and the March Hare is 'mad' and the Bandersnatch is an attack beast. I think I might use the fur as inspiration to make a small/ short jacket.

The first image is also from the Tim Burton film from this image I created the second images which is a set up of tea cups and plates I used to draw from as primary imagery. The third image is from the book 'Alice in Wonderland' illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia. I like the way this has been illustrated as it looks dark and dull, I think this will be one of the main things I focus on as I like the idea of using this to influence my exhibition.
This is an image also from the Tim Burton film its of the White Queen which is a new character that has been introduced, I like this image as its a bit like the Mad Hatter's Tea Party they are lots of things on the table and instead of tea she is making a potion to turn Alice small, this is important because my garment will have lots of different sized thing on it and I thought it was important to note where the potions came from.
The first image is of mushrooms from the the Tim Burton film 2010 from this image and other images from the book illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia I created the mushrooms in the second image to draw as primary imagery. Mushrooms will be my main focus as I like the shape I could use this a a print and also for the shape of my garments.
